This is a very nice quality mens capotain hat, aka pilgrim hat , made by German hatmaker Lembert Hutfabrik of Augsburg, founded in 1861 by brothers Kaspar and Raimund Lembert. The capotain is known as a pilgrim hat because it was the style of hat favoured by English Puritans, of whom the Pilgrims were a sect known as the Separatists. The inside top of this pilgrim hat has a label affixed to it that reads “Lembert Trachten-Hut”. The leather sweatband is gold stamped “Lembert 700 Jahre Hutmacher Made in Germany” and with the retailer’s name “Hut-Schottl Jnh. Maria Schottl Bad-Tolz, Marktstr. 61”. The content label on the sweatband reads “Reine Schur-Wolle”, which translates to “pure new wool”. It has the original owner’s initials of “JZ” affixed to the sweatband and has a size 57 label - this should be equivalent to a size 7 1/8, but it seems more like a size 7. It measures 22” around the sweatband and 6 1/4” by 7 3/4” across the opening. The brim of this pilgrim hat measures 2 1/4” in width and the crown has a height of 5 1/4”. It is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear or other defect - this hat is clean and looks to have been very well cared for. This is a nice quality pilgrim hat not a costume hat, although it would be great to use at Thanksgiving!
