This is a blazer that would have been worn by an official of the Canadian Olympic team during the 1976 Montreal Olympics. My understanding is that four Montreal based fashion designers were responsible for uniforms worn during the 1976 Montreal Olympics - John Warden, Marielle Fleury, Michel Robichaud and Leo Chevalier. Different working groups were designated by colours and red was reserved for official positions. This 1976 Montreal Olympics blazer appears to have been worn by a member of the Canadian team - I did see one similar jacket that belonged to a member of Montreal Olympics medical staff. The jacket has a crest on the chest pocket that is comprised of the Maple Leaf, the Olympic rings and Canada 76 below., all outlined in metallic gold thread. All of the buttons are made of brass with a raised image of the Olympic rings within the Maple Leaf. The tailor’s label on this 1976 Montreal Olympics jacket has the owner’s name in it, difficult to interpret, and I could find no information
Fabric: Wool or wool blend twill
Sizing: No size is indicated, and although I think should fit a medium size (US 38, maybe 40) - please rely on the following measurements for fit:
Shoulders: 17 1/2” across seam to seam
Sleeves: 25 1/2” long from the shoulder seam
Sleeve Inseam: 17”
Chest: 42” around, depending on overlap, and meant to fit loosely
Waist: 36” around
Length: 33”, measured flat
Condition: The lining has a bit of discolouration in a couple of places, but otherwise, it is in very clean condition with no wear, tear, staining or odour - obviously worn only for 2 weeks and stored well.
This 1976 Montreal Olympics jacket appears to be rather rare - I haven’t been able to find another, so this is a wonderful addition to a Canadian or 1976 Montreal Olympics collection!
